Can I change the email client 4Degrees opens when composing emails? (Chrome)
There are two ways to set up Chrome so that the 4Degrees platform uses your preferred email client for composing emails:
- Changing the default email in Chrome
- Installing Google's Mailto Extension for Chrome
Changing your default email in Chrome
- Open a window of your Chrome browser and click the three-dots icon next to the URL address bar.
2. Navigate to Settings.
3. In the Settings tab that appears in your Chrome browser, scroll down to the bottom and click Advanced. This will expand your settings options.
4. In the first group that appears, Privacy and security, click Site Settings second from the bottom.
5. In the Permission options that appears, find the Handlers setting near the bottom of the list. It'll look like this:
6. Select Handlers and you'll see at least one horizontal switch where you can allow any website you visit to ask you if it can become Chrome's default handler. Switch this setting to the on position, as shown below. (If it's already switched on, switch it off and on again.)
7. Once your Allow protocol has been switched on for default handlers, open 4Degrees in a new tab and make sure you're signed in. Select the Contacts tab.
8. Find a contact you want to send a test email to and click their email address (shown below.)
10. For Gmail users: click Allow in response to the Chrome pop-up, as shown below.
Installing Google's Mailto Extension for Chrome
If you're having trouble getting the above steps to work (for example, your Handlers window in Step 6 appears blank with no options), you can install Google's Mailto Extension for Chrome instead.
1. Open the Mailto Extension.
2. Select the Add to Chrome button on the right side of the page.
3. A permission window will pop-up confirming that you want to add the extension. Select Add extension.
3. Once the extension has been added, you will be prompted to set up your email service preferences. If you want to set it up for Gmail, choose Gmail. Close the window once done.
4. You will know the extension was successfully added to your Chrome because it will show up on your toolbar, as shown below.
5. Next, check that the extension works. Open 4Degrees in a new tab (make sure you're signed in.) Select the Contacts tab.
6. Find a contact you want to send a test email to and click their email address (shown below.)
