How do I get more contacts in the system?

4Degrees gives you the most robust results (for search, recommendations, and more) when we've captured your relevant professional network to the most complete extent possible.

If you're feeling like we're missing some of your contacts, some of the steps below can help us capture more:

1. Sync additional email accounts

Many of us have multiple personal and professional email accounts that we use to communicate with our professional contacts. To have the most complete view of your network in 4Degrees, you'll want your relevant email accounts to be synced to the system.

To do that, go to the Email Sync page within your account settings.  In the "Email Sync" section of the page, you should check that:

  • The email addresses you communicate with professional contacts through regularly are listed.
  • They are all set to "On", meaning the system is connected to those accounts and is capturing the contacts you've got in those systems.

If it feels like we haven't captured all of the relevant contacts that reside within the email accounts you've already got connected, please contact us and we'll investigate.  One potential cause is that these contacts have not met the communication threshold that we look for before creating a contact on your behalf.

2. Add Contacts from LinkedIn via the Chrome Extension

If you don't have our chrome extension installed yet, click here to install it. Once you login to the extension (click here to learn how to login), navigate to someone's Linkedin profile. Find and click the 4Degrees icon on the right-hand side of your screen to open up the chrome extension:

Then select "add now" if this is a brand new contact, or select "add LinkedIn profile to existing contact" if the contact already exists in 4Degrees.

3. Export your LinkedIn connections

If you want all of your LinkedIn contacts imported into 4Degrees - you can do a LinkedIn export and then import that list into 4Degrees.

To export your LinkedIn contacts:

  • Login to LinkedIn (if you're not already!) and go to this link
  • Click the button next to "Pick and Choose", and select "Connections"
  • Press the blue "Request Archive" button, and enter your LinkedIn password in the pop-up box
  • After a few minutes, you'll get an email (in whichever email you use to sign into LinkedIn) that "Your LinkedIn data archive is ready".  Click the link, and then the "Request Archive" button on the page it takes you to
  • When the ZIP file finishes downloading, upload the contacts into the system. The instructions to do this can be found here.  Please also make sure that you have email addresses associated with any contacts that you upload into the system (if you do not, our ability to enrich them and / or potentially deduplicate them with your existing contacts will be limited).

Note: as of Nov 2018, LinkedIn has removed email addresses from their export - while we will enrich them the best we can (with locations, tags, etc.), our ability to do so is reduced as a result.
